Härdning är en metod där material värms upp till en hög grad i en ugn för att få nya egenskaper som det inte hade innan. Dessa egenskaper kan vara att öka: hårdheten, segheten och hållbarheten. What gives the material better properties has to do with the dislocation mobility being redirected in the material. Dislocation is different from material to material and therefore also requires different types of methods to succeed in getting the properties you want. THE HARDENING METHODS AVAILABLE ARE: TEMPERING VACUUM HARDENING SET HARDENING HARDENING CARBONITRIDING NITROCARBURATION + AFTEROXIDATION VACUUM HARDENING Vacuum hardening is a thermal treatment method where tool steel heats the surface access to oxygen and gives hard properties to the material. After the material has been vacuum cured, it must be tempered . Depending on whether you want a nice surface without discoloration, you can make the tempering in the vacuum oven. If there are no specific surface requirements or requirements for the appearance, then you can use the cheaper method, to tarnish in an ordinary tempering furnace. When the components are manufactured in a machine are they often dirty and oily. To prevent these parts to arrive to our customers like that, we offer industrial washing of the components. WASHING & CLEANING WHY SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR COMPONENTS? WHY SHOULD YOUR DETAILS BE WASHED? To guarantee high quality of a mechanical component, the first task is always to measure. But no matter how carefully you measure, it is not possible to avoid unwanted particles. Unfortunately, these particles can affect the durability of the product. The particles in question can be: OIL DIRT CHIPS Oil, dirt and chips can be avoided if the CNC-turned component is washed in an industrial wash after machining. WASH OFF OIL When the components are machined, the CNC machine uses oil or emulsion to cool the workpiece and tools. This oil later remains on the component as a film. To get rid of this film, you have to wash it off with alkaline detergent. WHAT RESULTS CAN YOU GET IN AN INDUSTRIAL WASHER? At Turnab, we use an alkaline washing machine, which means that you can: WASH OFF PARTICLES When the components come out of the CNC machine, there are small particles and chips left on the part. These particles are not noticeable during quality inspection, but by washing the pieces in alkaline detergent, particles and chips disappear. This avoids quality problems in the products lifecycle. ADD NON-PERMANENT CORROSION PROTECTION By adding rust protection to the detergent, materials that are otherwise sensitive to corrosion can get a rust protection that lasts less than surface treatment, but which provides protection during transport and delivery.

All hardened steels must be tempered, with a few exceptions. If the tempering does not take place in a vacuum oven, there will be a color change at degrees above 150-200 degrees. TEMPERING Tempering is a process that is usually performed according to some type of hardening method. When you use some type of hardening method, you maximize certain types of properties that the method offers. This makes other characteristics less good. The purpose of tempering as a post process is to change the properties of the material that are less good to become better. By Letting us provide the heat and surface treatment for the components we machine, you contribute to a more sustainable future. WHAT IS HEAT & SURFACE TREATMENT? Heat and Surface Treatment is the collective name for a method performed on metals and non-metals to meet certain criteria. These criteria can either be for aesthetic reasons, but are most done to increase durability by: PREVENT WEAR AND TEAR ON THE MATERIAL PROTECTS THE COMPONENT FROM ELEMENTS OF NATURE ELECTRICAL INSOLATION WHY HEAT & SURFACE TREATMENT? Products are heat and surface treated to produce beautiful, durable, and strong components. CORROSION When a metal is in its natural form before it is mined, it has different mineral forms. When the metal is machined and the minerals are refined into a component, it’s not as stable as in its mineral form. Rust, also called corrosion is nature's way of getting the metal to return to its natural mineral form. Surface treatment means that you somehow create a protective layer between the raw surface of the component and the elements of nature, to prevent the minerals from breaking down. CORROSION PROTECTION ELECTRICITY & HEAT It is not only the forces of nature that can break down metals, electricity and high temperatures also affects metal in a negative way. Most metals conduct electricity, which is good for purposes such as electrical cables, but in some cases, you don’t want the metal to conduct current. To prevent the metal from conducting current, the metal can be covered with a surface that does not penetrate the electrons and insulates the component. Electrolytic surface treatment provides a protected film of chromium, nickel, or zinc. If you want the component to conduct electricity well, you can treat the material with a surface such as silver or gold, which is very lively. ELECTRICAL PROTECTION FINISH When a component is treated to be stronger and more durable, it can look ugly. Toughness is not always the only criteria. Since many of our finished products reach consumers, aesthetics is also important. The most important thing is to protect the component from the elements of nature, but in some cases it’s just as important that the product is exposed in a way that satisfies the viewer’s eye. HOW DO I GET A NICE FINISH ON THE COMPONENT? HARDNESS & TOUGHNESS Some base materials do not meet the criteria found on the component when it comes to how strong it should be. Therefore, the component can be given new properties, where they can become harder or tougher via heat treatment. HOW DO I MAKE THE MATERIAL HARD? SOFT & SMOOTH SURFACES When a component is machined, sharp edges can appear. Then you must polish these sharp edges, so they become smoother. While doing this, the mechanical component becomes softer and nicer to hold. HOW DO YOU MAKE THE SURFACES SMOOTH AND SOFT? CLEAN SURFACES A CNC machine uses oil to cool the tools as they cut the raw material. This means that the mechanical component is oily, but also has residues such as swarf and chips, or other particles of matter that the naked eye cannot see. It is then important to clean the product, so it can undergo the next process or be delivered to the customer. Through cleaning, the component also receives thin rust protection that protects it during transportation or storage. HOW TO GET THE COMPONENT CLEAN? HEAT & SURFACE TREATMENT METHODS Which surface treatment you choose for your product is defined by the purpose of the use. It is important already in the engineering stage of a product, to decide how it should be treated or not. HARDENING SURFACE TREATMENT GRINDING DRUM POLISHING WASHING WHAT IS SURFACE TREATMENT? Surface treatment is a method where you apply a thin layer of chemical liquid on the material's surface. This chemical liquid then creates a protective film. Depending on what you want to protect and what material you have for your component, this film can provide different protection: ELECTRO-GALVANIZING PHOSPHATATION ANODISING REQUEST A QUOTE SURFACE TREATMENT WHAT IS DRUM POLISHING? Drum polishing is a method where you put the components in a drum and spin them together with a liquid called compound and stones called chips. If a mechanical component has tight tolerances the CNC lathe has difficulty keeping up with. Then you have to use a machine that is able to keep such tight tolerances, and that is a grinder. GUIDE TO YOUR MECHANICAL COMPONENT Which manufacturing method is really best for your component and what type of supplier do you really need? Product development can be a jungle, which is why we at Turnab have produced this guide. To facilitate the work for you, so you can make the right decision for your purposes. Almost everything mechanically needs round details to be able to function. Manufacturing / processing round details by hand is next to impossible. Therefore, you need machines that can manufacture round cylindrical units with high precision. CNC machining is a digital manufacturing method that can produce high-precision products in thousands of millimeters. The word processing refers to how to refine raw materials into a finished geometric component such as: REFINE "Make more valuable" By refining, the properties of the raw material are changed. CNC Computer numerical control ” - The machine's language is called G-code and tells the machine where it should move, how fast it should move and which path it should follow. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control and is the control system itself in an industrial machine.
